Folks, I stood out next to a church in North Carolina, in the parking lot, in the rain, for seven hours a couple of days ago talking to people about why I believe they should vote for Barack Obama. I had one man tell me that he would never vote for a Muslim; I had a few people tell me they voted for Barack and then selected a straight GOP ticket; and I had several people tell me that they've never voted for a democrat in their life until that day.
It's hard for me to express the joy I feel for having contributed, even in a small way, to helping Barack and Joe Biden carry the state. A state that hasn't gone to a democrat in a presidential election in over 30 years. And a state that, having grown up here, I never thought could elect a black man for president. I am SO PROUD that North Carolinians proved me wrong.
I've got great hopes for our new president. I anticipate telling my grandchildren about the day I stood in the rain for seven hours working for something I believe in with all my heart - and telling them with pride.
